Ethereum’s Buterin outlines preferred wallet checklist

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared his expectations and standards for the future of Ether wallets.

Vitalik Buterin opined that user experience, security, privacy, light client consensus, and artificial intelligence represent five focus areas for Ethereum (ETH) wallet developers. According to a Dec. 3 blog post, Buterin is confident that wallet user experience would improve with simplified transactions across ETH layer-2s and optimized gas payments for executing swaps.

He added that standardizing ETH payments and on-chain transactions with QR codes will encourage greater blockchain adoption.

Buterin said builders should strengthen security using multi-signature technology and social recovery to combat bad actors and malicious activities. Social recovery within the context of account abstraction has been a major talking point for Ethereum and other decentralized networks as cryptocurrencies capture mainstream attention.

Buterin further argued that deploying zero-knowledge identity management models would also enhance wallet security. ZK technology allows users and innovators to verify information without exposing sensitive details.

Also, the veteran blockchain founder proposed leveraging ZK tools to power private transfers, unlock privacy pool technology, and support off-chain data storage.

Furthermore, he suggested adopting light client consensus verification and on-chain content versioning to curtail Web2 risks. Per the blog post, these features can be executed using existing resources and eventually harmonize Ether Wallet operability with future artificial intelligence interfaces, which Buterin said remained in their infancy.

These more radical ideas depend on technology that is extremely immature today, and so I would not put my assets today into a wallet that relies on them. However, something like this seems to be pretty clearly the future, and so it’s worth starting to more actively explore in that direction.
